Spring cleaning tips & tricks

Whether or not you are thinking of selling your home this spring, a thorough clean can help you prepare for summer and freshen up your home. Nothing feels better than a sparkling clean home and tackling those household tasks that have been accumulating over the winter months. If you are planning on listing your home, then a thorough spring-cleaning should be on the top of your list to help impress potential buyers and get the offers flowing. Here are a few tips to help you rejuvenate your home and make this year’s spring-cleaning as easy and efficient as possible:

Replace your bedding

If you can’t remember the last time you replaced your pillows or duvet then you may want to consider updating your bedding this spring. The Sleep Council recommends replacing your pillows every 2 years and your duvet every 5 years to avoid an accumulation of dust mites, allergens, and bacteria. At the very least, air out your bedding on the clothesline the next sunny spring day, including quilts, comforters, duvets and pillows.

Make your own cleaning supplies

Rather than going out and purchasing pricey (and often toxic) cleaning supplies, this year try making your own. A number of common household staples make excellent and effective cleaners. Try vinegar and water to clean your windows and get a sparkling, streak-free finish (add a bit of citrus to get that lemony-fresh scent). Baking soda is a natural deodorizer as well as a mild abrasive scrub, making it perfect for cleaning sinks, showers, and tiles.

Sparkling Windows

Cleaning the windows is an often overlooked cleaning task. This spring get the sparkling windows your home deserves. One trick to make this task a little easier is to buy a window squeegee from an automobile store. Using a squeegee will help prevent the annoying streaks that often arise from using rags or paper towel, and will help make cleaning your windows quicker and more effective. A screw-on extension can help you reach high windows and tricky spots.

Fresh refrigerator

Cleaning the refrigerator is a task that many of us avoid throughout the year, afraid of what may be lurking (or growing) at the back of the shelf. Spring is the perfect time to tackle this chore! Empty the contents of your fridge and give it a thorough scrubbing. Be sure to check the expiration dates and toss anything that is expired or moldy. Once your fridge is fresh and sparkling, replenish it with lots of seasonal fruits and veggies.

Dishwasher & Kettle

After repeated use throughout the year, it is common for gunk and debris to build up in the dishwasher and the bottom of your kettle. However, two simple household products can remedy this problem. Try using an equal part water-vinegar mixture in your kettle to help remove calcium and scum. Simply let the mixture soak in your kettle for one hour then boil and rinse! Pour one cup of vinegar into the bottom of an empty dishwasher and run a heavy cycle. Next, sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of the dishwasher and let it sit overnight. Run a cycle the next morning, and you’ll have a clean, fresh-smelling dishwasher.
